Silver Maple Tree Silver maples are a very fast growing tree that produces shade in just a few short years. Its leaves are the most deeply indented of any type of maple, and it is named for the fact that its leaf undersides are silvery, and in a breeze the bicolor effect of dark green and silver hues is displayed in its canopy. The silver backed leaves give a delicate lacy look to the whole tree. Specimens found in the open may easily grow to 80 feet tall by 60 feet wide, The silver maple has a natural vase shape with very dense branches. A distinctive trait of the lower branches is that they become very pendulous yet upswept at their tips. Fall color is a gorgeous blend of yellow, orange and red. Silver Maple seeds are the largest of any native maple and are also a food source for wildlife. Silver maples grow best in full sun to partial shade. The species is ideal for wet bottomland sites and can easily recover from extended periods of flooding. It is one of the best trees for poor soil and it transplants very easily. These trees are between 4-5 feet tall and well branched. Trees will be shipped bare root with moist material around their roots.
