Red Japanese Maple Tree The "Bloodgood" Japanese maple is one of the most popular Japanese maple tree cultivars. This fall foliage standout can be grown in zones 5 thru 8 and attains a maximum size of about 20' x 20'. It likes sun but can profit from a bit of light shade. Its leaves in summer are a reddish-purple. At fall foliage time those leaves become a striking crimson. Japanese Maple trees emerge in the spring with deep blood-red leaves and stay red throughout most of the summer. In fall they are once again a showpiece of the most brilliant color you can imagine. They grow relatively fast, about 8-12 inches per year. No pruning is necessary; they maintain a very bushy growth habit when planted in full sun. No pests bother them and they are relatively maintenance free once established. They do require adequate moisture during the heat of the summer. These trees are about 3-4 feet tall. Trees will be shipped bare root with moist material around their roots.
