Avalanche Feather Reed Grass Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Avalanche' is a hybrid feather reed grass cultivar that is basically a variegated form of 'Karl Foerster'. It is noted for its early bloom with narrow-vertical lines. Leaves have green margins with white in the center growing to 3-4' tall and 2" wide. This gorgeous grass is easily grown in average, medium to wet soil in full sun. It does well in heavy clay soils, unlike many of the other ornamental grasses. Avalanche prefers moist, rich soils that do not dry out. It blooms in light shade, and actually appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. In June, tightly-vertical flower stalks rise well above the foliage to 5’ tall bearing narrow plumes of feathery, purplish-green flowers that turn golden as the seeds mature. Clumps turn tan in fall and generally provide good continuing winter interest. These plants are growing in 4” pots.
