Ostrich Fern Grow these giant ferns for a real showpiece in your garden. These will reach 5 to 6 feet in height! They create an awesome tropical appearance in your garden and come back stronger year after year! A maintenance free plant that will give you many years of rewards. This is an elegant fern that will grow in sun or shade but does require a moist soil, especially if grown in the sun. It may be a suitable choice for wet areas. The large leaves resemble ostrich plumes, hence the common name. Fertile fronds unfurl in the center of the clump in spring and grow rapidly through the summer. Plants are aggressive spreaders, so give them plenty of room. Ostrich ferns are native to marshy areas, little islands, and deltas of shallow streams and creeks. Plant them in humus-rich, moist soil in part to full shade. Plants will tolerate some sun, but will need much more moisture to keep them looking good into late summer. Plants grow from dense, underground runners that spread out in every direction. Crowns can be dug up and replanted in the spring and early summer, planting them right at the level of the soil. Ostrich ferns make excellent background plants in the shade garden. Plant them with hostas and other tough perennials and shrubs. Ferns will be shipped bare root with moist material around their roots.
